Academic Scandal Brewing? The case of the Sappho poems


The academic world went into a frenzy recently with the supposed discovery of two new Sappho fragments. A supposedly anonymous collector in London was the source and at least one academic publically claimed to have a paper on the two fragments ready to publish. Then lo and behold, the gem disappeared. I don’t know if anyone heard the proverbial pin drop or not, but as rare as these discoveries are and as aggressive as academia can be, it’s a wonder anyone was brave enough to talk about it at all…
