Horrible Social Media Management and Professional Massage Associations


The way this issue relates to employee engagement is obvious from a business standpoint. The way it relates to participation in an organization also follows the same logic.

To Whom It May Concern,

This email is in regards to a Facebook post by a well known professional massage association. Below you will find the message about I that I posted and shared in this Linked In groups forum. However, I have just discovered that the post has been removed by the moderator for some reason and no explanation has been offered.

“I have just come from Facebook where I commented on a post that asked the question “Is it legal in your state to recommend self stretching techniques to your clients?” The fact that it would be illegal ANYWHERE was shocking to me and I said so. However, EVERYONE who replied to that post and even those who asked questions, were all given the same STOCK reply: You will need to check with your State Board. Why is that? Just bad social media management? I went to the organizations blog and chose to contact them about this by commenting on a post about continuing education. I thought that might get more attention than contacting them thru the email address. My primary criticism was the fact that there were other more effective ways to have created and fostered a sense of community among stakeholders by facilitating discussion and that their stock reply failed to address each commenter as an individual. I was the first to comment, it seemed as if they were assuming that I was unaware of my own States regulations for massage. (I have a Alabama massage license currently but I am not practicing and I also have my BS and I am working on my Masters right now) It was just so glaringly obvious that they were unprepared to address the question they posed in the first place! I have no idea if it’s an organizational issue involving funding or personnel or shortsightedness. But it’s unacceptable. Period. I would like to use my degree. If the organization wants a social media manager I am a member and you are all welcome to contact me.”

The moderators reasons for removing the post may seem obvious but it is also counter intuitive to a degree. I am not so preoccupied with job seeking that I am offended with the posts removal. However, I do hope that someone in a relevant position within the organization takes note of this criticism as it is valid and not without obvious merit. The original Facebook post in question is atrocious. Don’t shoot the messenger for saying the emperor has no clothes.
